Read Jeremiah 17:9
I quote part of this verse all the time probably because it seems to me to be one particular Scriptural truth that has been repeatedly and effectively opposed by the world. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard well-meaning believers instruct others to listen to, or follow, their hearts. Yet, Scripture is in direct opposition to that advice. Sadly, the world has so infiltrated our thought processes, and we’ve so neglected to study His Word, that most people don’t even realize the discrepancy here!
In truth, there have been times when I’ve listed the wickedness of my own heart (at any given moment) and seen the appalled looks on believers’ faces. Here’s the thing, if God searches the heart and tests the mind (and He does, read v. 10) then it would be good practice for us to do the same within ourselves. If you’re unable to see your heart’s deceitfulness, it will deceive you when you embrace directives to follow it. I say never follow it, test every desire with Scripture first.
Father, wake us up to the subtle deceits that creep into our thought processes, desires and goals. Inspire us to know You better so we can deny ourselves more effectively. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. Amen!
